Biography
Julia Biel works as an English vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist whose style draws from jazz, folk, and soul traditions. A London native raised in Sutton, Surrey, she studied at Oxford University while performing in a band. Following her selection as Perrier Vocalist of the Year in 2000, Biel became part of the F-IRE Collective (Fellowship for Integrated Rhythmic Expression) and appeared on separate 2004 releases by Polar Bear, Oriole, and Unity Collective. Her first full solo album, Not Alone, arrived the next year. Though a decade passed before she issued another record under her own name, she maintained ties with Polar Bear, contributed to Ben Watt’s track “Guinea Pig,” and cut the song “Bright Star” alongside Watt and Stimming. Love Letters & Other Missiles came out in 2015 and earned her a MOBO nomination for Best Jazz Act.
