Biography
Julien Dyne serves as drummer for several New Zealand outfits including Ladi6, Opensouls, and Fat Freddy's Drop while also operating as producer, DJ, and solo artist whose electronic productions draw from instrumental hip-hop, jazz, and funk. He entered production work during the mid-2000s by observing fellow musicians such as Opensouls members Jeremy Toy and James Duncan before developing his own approach through independent experimentation. Dyne participated in the Red Bull Music Academy sessions held in Rome during 2004 and returned for the 2007 edition in Cologne, where he collaborated with Theo Parrish, Mark Pritchard, and Sa-Ra's Om'Mas Keith. Following these experiences he released his first EP, Phantom Limbo, whose opening track "Maddingos" received a nomination from New Zealand student radio network bNet. His debut full-length Pins and Digits arrived in 2009 and included contributions from his bandmates in Opensouls and Ladi6 along with his father Paul, attracting favorable notice from Gilles Peterson and Benji B. Two years afterward he delivered Glimpse, which extended the futuristic, synth-heavy orientation established on the prior album and incorporated vocal appearances from Electric Wire Hustle's Mara TK and Claire Duncan of Dear Times Waste. With the 2013 album December, Dyne drew creative direction from the stacked vocal harmonies and broken rhythms characteristic of contemporary R&B.
