Harvey Sutherland

Mike Katz, the Australian pianist, producer, and analog synth player, performs under the stage name Harvey Sutherland, blending jazz, disco, and electronic funk through a restrained yet gripping approach. After issuing multiple EPs, Sutherland drew broader notice via the 2022 album Boy.

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Katz launched his career performing alone and began putting out EPs in 2013. As Harvey Sutherland, he built recognition early by capturing instruments in live takes and reshaping the recordings onstage. The project evolved in 2015 upon the Bermuda EP’s arrival on MCDE, at which point Katz brought in Graeme Pogson on drums and Tamil Rogeon on strings to handle live performances. Katz launched the Clarity Recordings imprint in 2016, inaugurating it with the double-single “Priestess/Bravado.” His first mini-album, Expectations, appeared in 2017 and also came out on Clarity. Sutherland reemerged in 2022 with the full-length Boy, extending his electronic pop sound rooted in synthesizers and funk grooves.
