Biography
Pete Dougherty, recording as Moon Boots, merges French house, minimalistic funk, disco, and soul into richly melodic productions. His upbeat dance instrumentals regularly brought in guest vocalists, among them Nic Hanson and Fiora on key tracks from the 2017 debut First Landing, and later Black Gatsby and Cherry Glazerr on the 2023 album Ride Away.
Born in Brooklyn, Dougherty cultivated an intense fascination with electronic music throughout his teenage years. After childhood piano lessons he encountered synthesizers, hip-hop, and the underground techno scene. Following his time at Princeton University he settled in Chicago, where he worked as a DJ, developed original material, and played in a synth pop trio that toured only occasionally.
While performing live and absorbing fresh sounds, he kept refining his own tracks, weaving together French house, jazz, minimalism, soul, and other influences he had absorbed. After moving back to Brooklyn he met the heads of Anjunadeep, which allowed him to finish his debut album as Moon Boots, First Landing, a vibrant set of melodic club tracks and R&B-tinged electronica released in summer 2017.
An EP built around the Black Gatsby-assisted First Landing single “Power” followed in 2018 and contained remixes by Mylo and Cratebug. His second album, Bimini Road, appeared in 2019 and later reached Billboard’s Heatseekers chart for electronic releases. Subsequent years brought a steady flow of singles, remixes, and EPs, including the 2020 Pure Moons EP series and the album Bimini Road (Remixed) with versions by Kenny Dope, Alex Metric, and others.
In 2022 Dougherty began issuing singles ahead of a third studio album, opening with the Cherry Glazerr collaboration “Come Back Around” in July. The complete album Ride Away arrived in March 2023 and featured Ora the Molecule, Dope Earth Alien, and additional guests.
