Biography
DJ and producer Duke Dumont crafts commercial house records suited to clubs, festival stages, and radio play. London-based, the artist first surfaced in the mid-2000s through a series of remixes that refined his production skills and paved the way for a string of U.K. pop successes as a lead act throughout the 2010s. “Need U (100%)” and “I Got You” both reached the top of the U.K. singles chart, while the number-two hit “Won’t Look Back” joined several other Top 40 entries between 2013 and 2017. Those tracks frequently claimed the top spot on the U.S. dance chart as well, with the initial pair earning Grammy nominations for Best Dance Recording. The run of chart successes led to Duality (2020), a compact debut album that has since been followed by 2024 singles “Energy” and “Ain’t Giving Up.” Although signed to major-label EMI, Dumont also runs his own imprint, Blasé Boys Club, which takes its name from an earlier series of EPs.
Born Adam George Dyment in Greater London, specifically the town of Harrow, Duke Dumont arrived in 2006 with a buzzing, whip-cracking remix of Mekon’s “Yes Yes Y’All.” Drawing inspiration from fidget-house figure Switch (M.I.A., Major Lazer), he steadily built visibility through additional remixes for Late of the Pier (“Bathroom Gurgle”), Bat for Lashes (“Daniel”), and Lily Allen (“The Fear”) before issuing his first DJ-mix album, Fabriclive 51, in 2010. Demand for his remix work remained high—in 2012 alone he reworked tracks by Bonobo, Santigold, and AlunaGeorge, among others—yet he also scored his own breakthrough in March 2013 with the Grammy-nominated “Need U (100%).” Co-produced by Futtize and featuring vocals from A*M*E, the single, which recalled early-’90s crossover house, ascended to number one on the U.K. pop chart. Exactly one year later, in March 2014, Dyment returned to the U.K. summit with the Whitney Houston-sampling “I Got U.” The Jax Jones collaboration earned its own Grammy nomination and achieved platinum certification in the U.K., Australia, and Italy. Further singles arrived to strong reception, among them 2014’s “Won’t Look Back,” 2015’s “Ocean Drive,” and 2017’s “Real Life” featuring Gorgon City and Naations. In 2018, Dyment resurfaced with “Inhale” featuring Ebenezer. The following year he reclaimed the summit of the U.S. dance chart for a sixth time with “The Power,” a collaboration with Zak Abel.
Dumont’s seventh U.S. dance-chart number one, the ’90s-house-indebted “Therapy,” opened 2020. That April he delivered his first official full-length, Duality, which combined several of his biggest hits with previously unheard material and was shaped to hold appeal well into the future as much as in the moment. Far from pausing, Dumont kept releasing new music, including the seventh installment of his For Club Play Only EP series along with later singles such as “Losing Control,” “Energy,” and “Ain’t Giving Up.”
