Biography
London-based pair Gorgon City fuses U.K. garage, deep house, and pop to notch club and chart successes alike. Their early material stood out for its weighty basslines, memorable vocal hooks, and refined studio craft, surfacing first on the then-independent Black Butter imprint in 2012. A run of popular singles, among them the U.K. Top Five hit "Ready for Your Love," built toward their acclaimed opening album, Sirens, issued in 2014. The duo kept a brisk pace in following seasons through nonstop DJ dates and joint projects with artists including Wyclef Jean and Chris Brown, before delivering the eagerly awaited second album Escape in 2018. Their third set, Olympia from 2021, merged Chicago and U.K. house sounds, whereas Salvation in 2023 returned to the pair's garage and breakbeat foundations. They followed up with the next release, Reverie, only a year afterward.
The act came together after North London producers Foamo, otherwise known as Kye Gibbon, and Rack N Ruin, otherwise known as Matt Robson-Scott, began working together in early 2012. Material from those first sessions emerged as the Crypt EP on Black Butter that February; the label had previously put out tracks under Robson-Scott's solo alias and from the future multi-platinum quartet Rudimental. Exactly twelve months later the duo achieved wider notice with the Real EP. Its bass-driven title cut, co-written and performed with British songwriter and DJ Yasmin Shahmir, registered as a modest U.K. single. Later that summer, aided by string-led house group Clean Bandit, they released "Intentions"; by year's end they had completed a second U.S. tour and opened for Rudimental on Australian shows.
Momentum from both recordings and performances peaked with the January 2014 U.K. Top Five single "Ready for Your Love," which carried vocals by MNEK. The next month brought an online stream of the disco-tinged "There Is No Other Time," produced for neon pop act Klaxons, yet attention quickly shifted to the duo's own "Here for You" featuring Laura Welsh, which climbed to number seven. Their debut album Sirens followed in October and reached number ten on the U.K. chart. Additional singles "Unmissable" with Zak Abel and "Go All Night" with Jennifer Hudson fell just short of the pop Top Ten, though each, like the album's earlier releases, nearly topped the U.K. dance listing.
Once initial attention subsided, Gorgon City began shaping a second album while balancing DJ appearances and concerts. They supplied a DJ set plus two fresh productions for the Defected compilation All Gone Pete Tong & Gorgon City Miami 2015, and they crafted Chris Brown's 2015 EP track "Blood on My Hands" for Royalty International. A series of singles followed, among them pairings with RØMANS on "Saving My Life," Vaults on "All Four Walls," and Wyclef Jean on "Zoom Zoom." The standout was 2017's "Real Life," a Duke Dumont and Naations collaboration that entered the U.K. Top 40. Outside their mainstream output, the pair placed the tech-house cut "Money" on Crosstown Rebels and issued the Grooves on the Vinyl EP via their own REALM Records. Escape, their sophomore album, arrived in 2018 with appearances from grime MC D Double E on "Hear That" and pop vocalist Kamille on "Go Deep."
Spring 2019 brought the singles "Lick Shot," "Delicious," and the Kaskade-assisted "Go Slow," the last of which led Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart; the MK collaboration "There for You" duplicated that achievement. In 2020 further releases arrived, including "Nobody" with Drama and "House Arrest" with Sofi Tukker, alongside the Realm EP at year's close. A follow-up Drama track, 2021's "You've Done Enough," registered on both U.K. and U.S. dance charts, while "Foolproof" with Hayden James and Nat Dunn charted in New Zealand and Australia. The third long-player Olympia surfaced in June 2021. Cut while Robson-Scott remained in London and Gibbon lived in Chicago, the record examined themes of escapism and isolation.
"Start Over," a 2022 single with Damian Lazarus and Leia Contois, preceded "Foggy Geezer" and "Sidewindah" featuring Flirta D. In 2023 Gorgon City issued "Rumblah," then "Voodoo," the opening single from their fourth album Salvation. Their first project for Positiva, it featured contributions from Julia Church, DRAMA, Jelani Blackman, and Selah Sol. They promptly launched another cycle, unveiling "Biggest Regret" with Bbyafricka and "One New Change" in the first half of 2024; both tracks appeared on the fifth album Reverie, released that July.
