Originating from London, Maya Jane Coles has built an extensive body of work as a producer, songwriter, and DJ. Her productions range across detailed, character-rich tech-house as well as dubstep and garage, the latter appearing chiefly under the Nocturnal Sunshine name. She first surfaced through a run of favorably received club EPs in 2008; beginning with the 2010 Humming Bird EP, subsequent releases placed growing weight on her vocal performances and songwriting. The 2013 debut album Comfort merged restrained house with pop elements in fluid fashion, whereas the 2017 double album Take Flight devoted one disc to downtempo material and the other to club-oriented tracks. Issued in 2019 as Nocturnal Sunshine, Full Circle extended into trap and drum'n'bass, and the 2021 set Night Creature assembled club tracks spanning multiple tempos.

Coles began creating music during her teenage years by employing software to produce pieces shaped by rap and trip-hop. House later claimed her attention, leading to a 2008 debut on the Dogmatik label via the Sick Panda 12". Initial remixes for fellow artists also appeared that year, yet demand intensified around 2011, resulting in reworkings for Tom Middleton, Little Dragon, Florence + the Machine, and the xx across the following several years. She further partnered with Lena Cullen on additional remixes released as She Is Danger. Throughout this period she maintained her own output on imprints including Mobilee, 20:20 Vision, and Hypercolour, in addition to LMD SkunkWorks, which issued a dubstep project under the Nocturnal Sunshine alias.

The 2013 album Comfort appeared on her own I/AM/ME label. Largely subdued and song-focused, it included contributions from Tricky, Miss Kittin, Kim Ann Foxman, and Karin Park, among others. As a DJ she has supplied mixes for Mixmag and Resident Advisor plus commercially issued sets in the !K7 DJ-Kicks series in 2012 and the Fabric series in 2014. After the self-titled Nocturnal Sunshine album in 2015, Coles delivered the expansive double album Take Flight in 2017, again balancing downtempo and house selections. The EP Waves & Whirlwinds followed near the close of 2018. Full Circle, the second Nocturnal Sunshine album, surfaced in 2019 and featured Peaches, Gangsta Boo, and RY X among its guests. In 2020 she issued the single “Run to You” with Claudia Kane, the EP Would You Kill (4 Me)?, and the EP Pleasure under the CAYAM alias. Subsequent remixes addressed tracks by Sylvan Esso, London Grammar, Emilee, and additional artists. The club-oriented album Night Creature arrived in 2021, incorporating guest vocals from Kane, Julia Stone, and Karin Park.
