Biography
Thomas Jack, an Australian DJ and producer, crafts dance tracks marked by their relaxed and sun-drenched atmosphere. During the mid-2010s he introduced the phrase tropical house to label his approach, achieving wider recognition through the 2015 single "Rivers." After an extended period away devoted to global travel and acquiring vocal technique, he resurfaced in 2022 via the polished, vocal-centered "Sandman."
Raised on a dairy farm, Jack later relocated to Sydney in order to pursue studies in music production. Around 2013 he began issuing tracks, drawing from deep house alongside acoustic rock and jam bands. His productions incorporated prominent live instrumentation, especially saxophone, flute, piano, and guitar, resulting in an overall relaxed, sunny, and uplifting character. Many selections also incorporated speech samples; the artist singled out Charlie Chaplin's closing speech from The Great Dictator as a key influence. He first applied the label "tropical house" in a lighthearted manner, yet the designation endured, soon linking international producers such as Kygo and Klingande to the same subgenre. Jack launched a podcast mix series titled Tropical House that included guest contributions from Felix Jaehn, Bakermat, Robin Schulz, and additional artists.
He gained visibility on EDM platforms through originals including "Symphony" and "The Final Speech," together with remixes for acts such as Of Monsters & Men and One Republic as well as house producers like Adrian Lux. An intensive touring calendar took him to venues worldwide, prompting Jack to describe himself as "homeless," although he had passed considerable time in the United States, notably Florida.
Much of 2014 was spent on remixes, among them his version of Gabriel Rios' "Gold," alongside live performances; the single "Rivers" appeared in 2015. The track registered strongly in multiple territories, above all Belgium, spawning further remixes and a collaboration with Norwegian R&B duo Nico & Vinz. "Rise Up," featuring Jasmine Thompson, arrived in 2016. The following year Jack issued The Versus EP, which featured his reworkings of material by RY X and the Acid. He then entered a five-year hiatus, living successively in Costa Rica, Los Angeles, Australia, and New York. Throughout the break he developed his singing ability and revised his production methods. The 2022 release "Sandman" marked his return, presenting a vocal-driven tech-house track.
