Biography
K-Otix approaches Houston rap from its lighter side, steering clear of gangsta clichés, strip-club antics, and the intoxicants associated with DJ Screw while embracing the straightforward values of traditional hip-hop. Their sound aligns more closely with A Tribe Called Quest than with the Geto Boys, delivering beats and rhymes rooted in classic structures. Producer Russel "the Are" Gonzalez drew inspiration and received direct training from Gang Starr legend and former Texas resident DJ Premier, allowing the group’s music to embody the reconstructive spirit of hip-hop. An enthusiastic follower, committed record collector, and student of jazz, soul, and funk, the Are channels that knowledge into inventive compositions only after absorbing those influences. His skill at selecting samples and drum patterns that energize audiences gains extra force from the contributions of Damien Randle and Micah Nickerson behind the microphones. The duo’s forceful style—marked by direct observations and rhythmic phrasing—rounds out the group’s recipe for engaging rap.
Formed in 1992, K-Otix quickly proved itself a strong live attraction, performing across Texas and earning an award at the 1995 Gavin Convention in New Orleans. When the Spontaneity EP appeared in 1997, fans who had followed the group through rough demo copies eagerly purchased the finished project. The independently issued record’s quality and resulting attention led to a collaboration with Philadelphia’s legendary DJ Cash Money on the track “Do You Wanna Be an MC.” Additional momentum came from a major distribution agreement with Bronx Science. Singles issued by the New York label, including “Mind Over Matter” and “World Renown,” reached playlists nationwide. The 2001 release of the full-length album Universal confirmed K-Otix’s international appeal. Subsequent years brought tours of Japan and Europe alongside featured appearances with the Lone Catalysts and Dallas radio personality Head Krack. In 2002 the group issued fresh material on its own K-Otix imprint: Hustler’s Theme, featuring the Are alongside Count Bass D, Truth Enola, D-Ology, and K of Example, and The Black Album, which showcases Damien and Mic rhyming over their own beats.
