Prior to her participation as a contestant in season eight of The Voice, the melodic rocker KimberlyNichole had already built a reputation as an independent artist with substantial stage experience. Hailing from Seattle, Washington, yet established in New York City, this multifaceted performer—working as a singer, songwriter, and vocalist—issued her first recording, the self-released The Yellow Brick Journey, during 2010. Director George C. Wolfe noticed the project and cast her in a musical segment for the 2014 film You're Not You, which featured Hilary Swank in the lead role. Her profile expanded further at the start of 2015 through her appearance on The Voice, where renditions of Ike & Tina Turner's "Nutbush City Limits," Sting's "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free," and Radiohead's "Creep" helped her secure a sixth-place finish. She returned to her demanding live calendar right after exiting the program. Within days, this included joining Slash onstage for a rendition of "Hey Joe" during the guitarist's prominent concert at Terminal 5 in New York.
