King Wilkie, a bluegrass sextet made up of Reid Burgess, John McDonald, Ted Pitney, Abe Spear, Nick Reeb, and Drew Breakey, assembled in Charlottesville, VA, during 2003. Pitney and Burgess first committed to the style after encountering it at a festival during their college years in Ohio. Once they settled in Virginia in 2001, they gathered the remaining players and started work on the group’s initial outing, the independently issued live recording True Songs, which surfaced in 2003, followed by the studio album Broke the next year. Jim Scott, whose credits include Tom Petty and the Dixie Chicks, produced the band’s subsequent effort, Low Country Suite, issued by Rebel in 2007.
