Biography
While Kjell Höglund first reached listeners through his mildly humorous successes "En Stor Stark" and "Jag Hör Hur Dom Ligger Med Varandra På Våningen Ovanför," his output since the 1971 debut has developed an unmistakably singular approach shared by almost no one else. Blending strands of classical verse, mythology, rock & roll, and the most theatrical strains of folk and country, his words and melodies continually teeter between genuine poetry and outright melodrama. Large crowds seldom materialized, yet a handful of chart entries arrived during the 1980s; by the following decade, even without widespread fame, his standing had grown among younger listeners, leading to appearances at several rock festivals and forays into contemporary production techniques.
Born in 1945 in Östersund in northern Sweden, Höglund spent his teenage years in a group shaped by instrumental acts such as the Shadows. After completing military service he relocated southward to Stockholm. While enrolled at university he attempted to interest labels in his material; when those efforts failed he funded the self-release of Undran, enlisting friends for the sessions. To keep costs down the album appeared without a printed sleeve and with noticeably limited fidelity. Blomstertid followed the same independent route. The harder-edged Häxprocess, issued in 1973, gained traction in alternative circles; its fifteen-minute title track achieved modest success, and once stock ran out Höglund launched the Alternativ imprint with Janne Hansson to reissue the record. He would continue issuing albums on his own label for the remainder of the century, yet the following year he recorded what many regard as his creative summit—Baskervilles Hund—even though sales remained modest at the time.
Throughout the latter half of the 1970s and the opening years of the 1980s Höglund produced numerous LPs, among them the politically oriented Hjärtat Sitter Till Vänster, while relocating frequently and supporting himself through temporary employment. On Tidens tecken and Hemlig Kärlek he began incorporating electronic instruments; the modest commercial headway of those releases finally allowed him to earn a living solely from music. Previously reluctant to tour, he embarked in 1986 on an extended run of concerts scheduled to conclude with the 1989 release of the next album. The unexpected breakthrough of "En Stor Stark" from Ormens År, however, turned the outing into a multi-year affair. That momentum prompted fresh recordings of earlier material, later compiled on Höglund Forever, and introduced Höglund to a broader public.
During the first half of the 1990s Höglund devoted greater energy to prose, publishing his debut novel Magnum Opus in 1991. Several low-profile years preceded the 1995 appearance of Incognito. Working with Tommy Lydell, Höglund fashioned a contemporary, gritty, electronic texture that earned strong critical approval and helped erode the novelty-artist perception that had long clung to him. Toward the decade’s close he performed at multiple rock festivals and delivered Kryptonit.
