Biography
Monica Zetterlund appeared with Ib Glindeman's ensemble in Denmark and joined saxophonist Arne Domnerus's group in Stockholm during 1957, beginning her studio work with Domnerus the following year. International stages became part of her schedule by the closing years of the 1950s. Stateside listeners chiefly recognize her jazz credentials through the 1964 album Waltz for Debbie, captured alongside pianist Bill Evans's trio. Beyond her own sessions, she also collaborated with the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis orchestra on It Only Happens Every Time in 1977 and with bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen on This Is All I Ask in 1998, among additional projects. Swedish folk songs and classical pieces found their way into a catalog otherwise centered on jazz. Her fame reached well beyond recordings; known for classical beauty, she took on acting roles in her native Sweden. Live appearances continued until a fire in her apartment led to her death in May 2005.
