Seemingly emerging without warning, Håkan Hellström burst onto the scene in spring 2000 when his debut solo single "Känn Ingen Sorg För Mig Göteborg" became an instant smash. Though this marked his first outing under his own name, he had already spent years in music, serving as bassist and drummer for the indie pop/rock cult heroes Broder Daniel and Honey Is Cool, the latter featuring the Knife's Karin Dreijer.

In 1999 he recruited several fellow musicians to lay down a demo of original material. While he had never composed songs for his earlier groups, Hellström had quietly amassed a collection of Swedish-language pieces. Once finished, the tape circulated among record labels, generating multiple offers; he ultimately chose Virgin on the condition that the album be tracked without delay. Both the resulting record and its accompanying live shows featured a seven-piece ensemble drawn from Soundtrack of Our Lives, Weeping Willows and Broder Daniel co-founder Daniel Gilbert, all longstanding figures in the Göteborg music community.

His second album, Det är Så Jag Säger Det, appeared in 2002 and incorporated Brazilian samba alongside the folk traditions of Swedish singers Evert Taube and Cornelis Vreeswijk. Ett Kolikbarns Bekännelser followed in 2005, after which he issued Nåt Gammalt, Nåt Nytt, Nåt Lånat, Nåt Blått, a collection of previously unreleased tracks. Following the 2006 birth of his son, Hellström largely withdrew from the industry, limiting himself to sporadic concerts and the occasional release—För Sent För Edelweiss (2008), 2 Steg Från Paradise (2010) and Det Kommer Aldrig Va över för Mig (2013). Each of the three reached number one in Sweden, with the last achieving triple-platinum status.

On 7 June 2014 he headlined his hometown Ullevi Stadium before a record crowd of 70,000. Fellow performers on stage that evening included jazz saxophonist Nils Berg, musical stalwart Mattias Hellberg and Lars-Erik "Labbe" Grimelund. The concert was later streamed at the close of 2014. His subsequent album, Du Gamla du Fria, topped the Swedish chart for three weeks and also performed strongly in Norway.
