Born Per Allan Magnus Claesson Uggla on June 18, 1954, in Stockholm, the Swedish comedic songwriter Magnus Uggla traces his lineage to Swedish nobility whose ancestors encompass several European monarchs such as John III of Sweden, Gustav Vasa, and Charlemagne. He launched his recording career in 1975 by channeling the prevailing pop and rock textures of the period alongside his own satirical bent, issuing the debut album Om Bobbo Viking. Through 1979 he continued to deliver one album annually, culminating in Sjunger Schlagers, credited to the Magnus Uggla Band. These releases nurtured a devoted cult audience while remaining just beneath mainstream notice until 1991, when Uggla received the Karamelodiktstipendiet. The annual honor, founded by Swedish comedian and musician Povel Ramel, recognizes Swedish innovators in lyric writing. He sustained an active schedule of writing, performing, and recording through the 1990s and subsequent decades, returning to public attention in 2007 by entering Melodifestivalen in pursuit of representing Sweden at that year’s Eurovision Song Contest. His characteristically provocative lyrics generated considerable debate, yet he was not selected; capitalizing on the exposure, he reissued nearly his complete catalog that same year through Sony.
