Bo Kaspers Orkester deliberately cultivated a sound untouched by rock and roll yet still became one of Sweden’s top-selling acts throughout the 1990s. The ensemble formed in 1991 and borrowed part of its name from lead vocalist Bo Sundström. Its debut album, Söndag i Sängen, appeared in 1993 and fused pop with jazz under a strong lounge influence. Although easy listening was experiencing a half-ironic resurgence at the time and the band was frequently linked to that movement, its music remained more genuinely jazzy, its lyrics too narrative and finely crafted to qualify as easy listening. Various jazz musicians contributed to and were sampled on the record; among them, saxophonist Per Johansson would later work with the group on repeated occasions. The core lineup consisted of drummer Fredrik Dahl, bassist Michael Malmgren, keyboardist Mats Asplén, and guitarist Lars Halapi, the last of whom also played on and produced recordings by Sophie Zelmani. Radio play and the band’s role as house orchestra for a popular television program helped distinguish it from contemporary acts. Its earliest supporters were largely college and university students, yet the gold-certified På Hotell, somewhat less steeped in retro styling, broadened its appeal. Amerika incorporated additional easy-listening touches while retaining witty lyrics that often stood in sharp relief to the arrangements; ironically, the very album that drew inspiration from the genre proved the least accessible in the catalog. By then the musicians were established figures who attracted large audiences on tour. Only with I Centrum, recorded as a quartet after Halapi’s departure, did the band score a genuine mainstream breakthrough. The more pop-oriented album earned a Swedish Grammy for Best Artist following nominations in four categories and, unsurprisingly given the awards’ commercial orientation, outsold every previous Bo Kaspers Orkester release.
