Swedish pop star Peter Jöback first gained widespread recognition in his home country through his prominent portrayal of Robert in Kristina fran Duvemala, the musical crafted by ex-ABBA members Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. Having trained from childhood at Stockholm's Adolf Fredrik Music School, Jöback secured parts in locally staged productions such as The Sound of Music and Snow White during his elementary years. Following his victory in Sweden's "New Talent" contest in 1989, he entered the 1990 Melodifestivalen with "A Sensation." Although he did not advance to Eurovision, the experience established him among Sweden's rising vocal talents. In the ensuing years he secured multiple prominent engagements, among them co-hosting installments of the Swedish Top of the Pops, appearing in Fame and The Jungle Book, and supplying the singing voice for the lead character in the 1993 Swedish dub of Disney's Aladdin.

Jöback's breakthrough arrived with the role of Robert in Kristina fran Duvemala. The production opened in Malmö in 1995, eventually becoming Sweden's second longest-running musical and collecting four Guldmasken awards. Shortly after the premiere, Jöback signed with Sony; his debut album, Personliga Val, reached stores in 1997, climbed to number two on the Swedish charts, and earned him an Artist of the Year nomination at the Swedish Grammy Awards. He rejoined the cast of Kristina fran Duvemala for another season in 1998. His performance of "The Gold Turned into Sand" from the original cast recording dominated the Swedish charts for nearly 40 weeks. In 1999 he received his first Guldmasken for the role. His second studio album, Only When I Breathe, appeared the following year and topped the Swedish charts. Two further releases arrived in 2002: the pop album I Feel Good and I'm Worth It and a well-received Christmas collection.

In 2003 Jöback played the MC in a Copenhagen staging of Cabaret. He issued two additional number-one albums in 2004—Det Har Är Platsen and Storybook, the latter recorded with the Gothenburg Symphony. A double-disc greatest-hits set containing two new tracks followed in 2006. Människor Som Du och Jag appeared in 2007, and another seasonal success, En God Jul och ett Gott Nytt År, arrived in 2008. East Side Stories, a 2009 covers collection spotlighting material by Chris Isaak, Ron Sexsmith, and Rufus Wainwright, included guest contributions from Kate Pierson, Declan O'Rourke, and Sia. Livet, Kärleken och Döden: La Vie, l'Amour, la Mort reached listeners in 2011, while I Love Musicals: The Album, captured with the Stockholm Sinfonietta, surfaced in 2013. Between stage and recording commitments, Jöback also took occasional screen roles, among them an appearance in the 2015 Scandinavian crime series Modus.
