Tomas Andersson Wij began his professional life in music journalism and book editing before stepping onto the stage as a singer and songwriter, where he quickly earned recognition for his craftsmanship and emotional depth. During childhood he performed on guitar and vocals inside church settings, only appearing before non-religious listeners once he reached the age of ten. Upon completing his studies he took positions at several of Sweden’s leading newspapers and music periodicals, yet in 1997 he reentered music by issuing the album Ebeneser. Poor sales followed, prompting him to keep his journalistic work. Consequently, many listeners remain unaware of that first release and regard Ett Slag För Dig, which appeared in 2000, as his initial record. The latter earned a Swedish Grammy nomination for Best Lyrics in 2001, although the prize ultimately went to the then-newcomer Håkan Hellström. Its words, noted for their intimate tone and reflections of contemporary life, nevertheless drew widespread critical praise and elevated Andersson Wij above most peers in the singer-songwriter field. The arrangements drew from Sweden’s established troubadour lineage, particularly the example of Ulf Lundell, while also incorporating elements of sacred music. At a time when open expressions of faith were uncommon in Sweden, Andersson Wij’s candid religiosity stood out and likely contributed to his exposure on both national television and radio.
