Kon first encountered the rise of hip-hop while visiting New York City on family outings and while growing up in Boston. As a child he began amassing records and took up DJ'ing by the middle of the 1980s. Meeting fellow selector Amir Abdullah in 1996 led the pair, performing as Kon & Amir, to issue multiple compilations spotlighting rare soul, funk, jazz, and disco cuts; these included the self-released On Track volumes, drawn from unusual sample material, plus the Off Track volumes put out by BBE. Kon also supplied co-production work on hip-hop recordings by J-Treds, Ripshop, and Boston icon Edo G, yet only in 2013—following numerous re-edits and remixes—did he begin issuing his own disco- and post-disco-inspired house music simply as Kon. The All About Youx EP appeared on Soul Clap that May. Three months afterward came the BBE full-length On My Way, featuring vocal contributions from Amy Douglas, Georg Levin, and Ben Westbeech.
