Emerging as a vocalist and composer distinguished by her warm and agile singing style, Lady Zamar developed her craft within Pretoria's hip-hop community in South Africa before achieving prominence on the country's dance music rankings through her house productions, among them partnerships with Prince Kaybee, Junior Taurus, and DJ Mshega. The 2017 issuance of her debut solo effort King Zamar on Universal marked a commercial breakthrough, attaining multi-platinum certification.

Yamikani Janet Banda entered the world in Tembisa, South Africa, where her upbringing took place in the vicinity of Pretoria, and she commenced vocalizing when she turned six years old. Initially performing under the moniker Afro Jay, she engaged in freestyle sessions alongside fellow up-and-coming rappers throughout the urban area. Her encounter with the dance performer and beatmaker Junior Taurus occurred during the first half of the 2010s, leading to their joint project Cotton Candy, which CapCity Records put out in October 2015. Tracks such as the namesake single received widespread airplay on popular stations, expanding her reach to larger listenerships.

King Zamar represented her inaugural long-form solo release in March 2017 via Universal. She subsequently charted that year thanks to her contribution to "Charlotte," a composition of hers featured on Prince Kaybee's recording. Prior to marking its first anniversary, the album earned gold status, followed by double-platinum recognition just ahead of her sophomore full-length Monarch appearing in July 2019. During the same calendar year, she served in the capacity of a guest adjudicator for the televised vocal contest Idols South Africa.
