Singer/songwriter Lael Neale first blended melancholic folk, sun-drenched country, and indie rock, placing her lilting voice at the center of lush, occasionally twangy arrangements. After joining Sub Pop and developing a close working partnership with producer and accompanist Guy Blakeslee, she shifted toward minimalism on later releases. The 2021 album Acquainted with Night reduced many tracks to their simplest forms, while the 2023 follow-up Star Eaters Delight achieved its sparse pop sound through a deliberate rejection of digital recording techniques.

Neale grew up on a rural Virginia farm before relocating to Los Angeles to build a music career. There she collaborated with an array of musicians and producers, performed regularly, and issued her debut album, I'll Be Your Man, in 2015. Despite these efforts, she often found the final studio versions of her songs overly polished and constrained by conventional pop structures. In 2019 she began testing home-recorded, pared-back material on an Omnichord, an instrument offering a distinctive yet narrow sonic range. Several of those pieces gained additional guitar, piano, and production input from Guy Blakeslee, gradually forming the track list for her sophomore effort and Sub Pop debut, Acquainted with Night. Although tracked in 2019, the album appeared in February 2021. Following its release, Neale moved back to her family’s Virginia farm as the COVID-19 pandemic began. Removed from Los Angeles and immersed in rural quiet, she started composing songs that examined contrasting extremes. Reuniting with Blakeslee in a production capacity, she shaped eight reflective, economical compositions that became her third album, Star Eaters Delight, issued by Sub Pop in April 2023.
