Biography
Victoria, British Columbia, produced alternative country songwriter Leeroy Stagger, whose compositions examine personal hardships and philosophical inquiries through language that remains both articulate and grounded. His roots in punk informed the raw, energetic edge of initial releases like Dear Love (2004) and Depression River (2006), where rock elements dominated the roots-rock blend. Over subsequent years the material grew more introspective, leading to a refined yet forceful style showcased on Little Victories (2010) and Love Versus (2017).
Stagger spent his formative years in British Columbia and first performed with punk outfits in Victoria, notably the Graveyard Sluts and the Staggers. Those groups generated sufficient attention to secure an invitation from Hot Hot Heat for a Canadian tour in 2002. Following that experience he shifted toward country-inflected songwriting, beginning with the Six Tales of Danger EP released the same year. His debut full-length effort, the gritty yet heartfelt Dear Love, arrived in 2004 and preceded Beautiful House in 2005. One track from the latter, “Just in Case,” aired during a January 2006 episode of Grey’s Anatomy, broadening his reach across Canada and the United States. Shortly afterward, Depression River emerged and marked a decisive critical and commercial breakthrough. As recognition increased, Stagger confronted escalating struggles with alcohol; he achieved sobriety while preparing his fourth album, an experience documented on Everything Is Real (2009), issued via his Rebel Tone imprint. Little Victories followed in 2010, appearing on Rebel Tone domestically and on the Megaforce-affiliated 00:02:59 label stateside.
Gold Lake Records partnered with the artist for Radiant Land in 2012. Subsequent projects included Truth Be Sold (2013) and Dream It All Away (2015). True North then signed Stagger, and Love Versus (2017) became his inaugural release for the label as well as the first recorded in a fully equipped home studio. Despite the domestic setting, the sessions featured notable contributors such as Paul Rigby, guitarist for Neko Case, and Pete Thomas, drummer for Elvis Costello & the Attractions. While developing the next body of work, Stagger accumulated sufficient songs for three separate albums; these formed the core of two subsequent releases. Me and the Mountain surfaced in May 2019, emphasizing his roots-oriented inclinations, whereas Strange Path, issued that September, explored more experimental and introspective territory through production and arrangements reflecting contemporary pop sensibilities.
