The breakthrough of genre-defying figures like Beck rendered it acceptable to weave an array of styles—rap, funk, punk, folk, blues, and beyond—into a single sound. Leroy issued his self-titled debut in 2001, and the record immediately signals the influence of Beck’s eclectic rock approach. A native of Spokane, WA, Leroy absorbed the classic rock of Santana, Jimi Hendrix, and Elton John at an early age through his parents’ record collection. After taking up the guitar and nurturing ambitions of rock stardom, he relocated to Los Angeles in the early ’90s. Following years of club performances and dead-end jobs, he signed with Hollywood in 1999. Ahead of his 2001 self-titled debut, his songs had already appeared in the film 10 Things I Hate About You and the television series Felicity.
