Biography
Lightning in a Twilight Hour extends the melancholic yet meticulously crafted musical output of Bobby Wratten, previously associated with the Field Mice and Trembling Blue Stars among others. Collaborating with core personnel from those earlier groups, the ensemble adopts a subtly more electronic and ambient approach. Initial outputs align closer to the indie electro style of Trembling Blue Stars, yet the debut full-length, Fragments of a Former Moon from 2015, incorporated sparse ambient instrumentals. Subsequent works shifted toward shoegaze and experimental soundscapes, with Overwintering in 2022 incorporating elements of pastoral folk, indie rock guitar jangle, and clipped melodies. Consistent with Wratten's prior endeavors, the project maintains an essence of sadness and gloom, enveloped in gradually evolving sonic textures that vividly realize those emotions.
Wratten established the Field Mice, an influential indie pop act, during the late 1980s, where he composed, performed, and vocalized tracks steeped in themes of romantic gain and loss over several years. Following the group's dissolution, he pursued Northern Picture Library and Trembling Blue Stars, sustaining a similar artistic direction. Upon the conclusion of Trembling Blue Stars in 2010, Wratten paused before launching Lightning in a Twilight Hour in 2014. Enlisting longtime producer Ian Catt alongside Field Mice bassist Michael Hiscock, Trembling Blue Stars vocalist Beth Arzy, and Field Mice/Northern Picture Library vocalist Anne Mari Barker-Davies—who served as inspiration for numerous Wratten compositions—the project's sonic parallels to his earlier bands become apparent. Through their association with the Spanish label Elefant, the group issued the single "The Memory Museum" toward the end of 2014, succeeded by the EP Slow Changes and then the LP Fragments of a Former Moon in early 2015. While rooted in Wratten's established style, the album ventured into ambient instrumental realms across several pieces. In April 2016, they followed with the four-song EP And All the Ships at Sea, exploring shoegaze, electronic folk, and soundscapes. Further exploration of experimental sounds occurred on the 2017 cassette release Quiet Actions, comprising two tracks exceeding half an hour that incorporate repetition, field recordings, and found sounds. This progression toward a more organic, deliberately unfolding aesthetic culminated in the band's second album, Overwintering. Prior to its arrival, the vocal harmony-rich "The Circling of the Seasons" emerged as their most pop-oriented single to date, issued independently one month earlier. The full album presented a more intimate and subdued atmosphere featuring gently plucked guitars, undulating synths, and ample space for the three vocalists, drawing from both sorrowful British folk traditions and the despondent American slowcore of the 1990s, and appeared via Elefant in April 2022.
