Having served as lead singer for the progressive jazz-rock ensemble Affinity, Hoyle launched a short-lived solo venture in 1971, perhaps aiming to mirror the trajectory taken by Christine Perfect after her exit from Chicken Shack. Pieces Of Me offered an outstanding platform for the vocalist’s versatile approach. Supported by guitarist Chris Spedding along with Karl Jenkins on oboe, bassist Jeff Clyne, and drummer John Marshall, both drawn from Nucleus, she demonstrated command across diverse repertoire, most clearly in her readings of Laura Nyro’s ‘Lonely Women’ and Nina Simone’s ‘Backlash Blues’. Following her marriage to Pete King, one-time musical director for saxophonist Ronnie Scott, she chose to step away from music altogether. Collectors of Vertigo Records long paid premium prices for original pressings of this estimable album on vinyl, until its eventual appearance on CD in 2002.
