Born Kirk Anthony Davis on 28 December 1970 in Waterhouse, Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies, the performer entered the dancehall arena in 1988 as the older brother of Beenie Man. His reading of “Man In The Mirror” promptly earned him the tag Jamaica’s Michael Jackson. Working with Patrick Roberts, he cut the hits “Left Me Lonely,” “Love Tonight,” “I’ll Do Anything,” and the further Jackson interpretation “Remember The Time.” The year 1994 brought his version of the soul ballad “I Swear” alongside the duo successes with Silver Cat, “Show Me Your Motion” and “Dionne.” After signing to Shocking Vibes he issued I’m Ready in summer 1995, which included a guest spot by his brother. The following year he joined the Shocking Vibes Showcase tour—its sole singer—alongside headliner Beenie Man, Snagga Puss, Silver Cat, Alley Cat, and Tanto Metro; promoters grumbled that Beenie Man traveled only as part of the package, yet audiences embraced the format. Back in Jamaica he revisited the Michael Jackson catalog with his take on “You Are Not Alone” and scored a major dancehall success in tandem with Alley Cat on “Nineties Trample.” By summer 1996 he had begun producing records and handling business affairs under the guidance of his mentor Patrick Roberts. In 2000 he resurfaced under the name Kirk Davis on the Shocking Vibes one-rhythm album The Joker.
