Biography
Formed during the first years of the 2010s in Virginia, the bluegrass ensemble Love Canon revisits pop, rock, and new wave favorites from the 1980s, striking a consistent balance between lightheartedness and respect. Their intricate charts and accomplished playing opened doors to partnerships with figures such as Jerry Douglas and Aoife O'Donovan, each of whom contributed to the group's fourth album, the 2018 release Cover Story: A Journey Through Music's Greatest Decade.
Jesse Harper on lead vocals and guitar, Adam Larrabee on banjo and vocals, Andy Thacker on mandolin and vocals, Darrell Muller on bass and vocals, Jay Starling on dobro, and Nate Leath on fiddle established the project in Charlottesville. The debut collection, Greatest Hits, Vol. 1, presented bluegrass interpretations of well-known 1980s tracks such as Toto's "Africa," Human League's "Don't You Want Me," and ZZ Top's "Legs." Issued in March 2012, it was succeeded later that same year by Greatest Hits, Vol. 2, which addressed material from Peter Gabriel, Devo, and the Police, among additional sources. The band resurfaced in 2014 with Vol. 3, whose standout selections included readings of songs by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Bruce Hornsby plus a concert rendition of the Grateful Dead's "Touch of Grey." After Nate Leath's departure, the remaining five members sought outside contributors while preparing their next project. When Cover Story: A Journey Through Music's Greatest Decade appeared on Organic Records in 2018, the set incorporated notable guest appearances on numbers originally by Depeche Mode, Billy Joel, Squeeze, and other artists; the supporting cast featured Jerry Douglas, Aoife O'Donovan, Keller Williams, and fiddler Alex Hargreaves of Turtle Island String Quartet.
