Luísa Sonza

Luisa Sonza works as a Brazilian singer, songwriter, and actress whose forceful alto voice moves through Latin, Brazilian, and Arabic pop while collecting multiple MTV Millennial, Brazilian Youth, and My Nick awards. From the 2017 self-titled EP through the 2019 debut album Pandora she placed nine gold-, platinum-, or diamond-certified singles, among them “Devagarinho,” “Pior Que Possa Imaginar,” and “Bomba Relógio” featuring Vitão, who later joined her on the 2020 Top 20 track “Flores.” Her follow-up album DOCE 22 arrived in 2021 and featured the Top 20 single “Penhasco.”

Born to farming parents in Tuparendi in rural Rio Grande do Sul, Sonza started performing at song festivals at age five and joined the band Sol Maior at seven, appearing with them on and off until she turned 17. In 2014 she began posting homemade cover videos on YouTube that earned her the nickname “the queen of covers” across social platforms. She enrolled at Franciscana University in 2016 to study law yet withdrew after one semester once Universal offered a recording contract. Her first original single “Good Vibes” appeared soon afterward, followed by the 2017 self-titled EP whose track “Rebolar” topped YouTube’s Brazilian chart when released as a single and video.

Sonza entered a civil marriage with singer and comedian Whindersson Nunes in 2018 and made her acting debut in an episode of the Dr. Darci series. That July she issued “Devagarinho,” which reached the streaming Top 50 and received diamond certification. In October she recorded Aguinaldo Silvato’s “Nunca Foi Sorte” for the telenovela O Sétimo Guardião and sang it during a cameo appearance. “Boa Menina,” released a month later, also earned diamond status, and “Nunca Foi Sorte” followed in December.

Early in 2019 Sonza re-recorded “Boa Menina” in a forró arrangement. March brought the original “Pior Que Possa Imaginar,” which entered Brazil’s Top 100, reached the streaming Top 20, and gained platinum certification by May. Pandora, her first full-length project, appeared in June; she wrote or co-wrote seven of its eight tracks, five of which charted, including the diamond-certified “Garupa” with Brazilian singer and self-professed drag queen Pabllo Vittar. Another album cut, “Bomba Relógio” featuring Vitão, earned double-platinum status and its video surpassed 60 million views. Before year’s end she joined Anitta, Lexa, and MC Rebecca on the Top 30 platinum collaboration “Combatchy.”

Even amid the global COVID-19 pandemic Sonza maintained a demanding schedule in 2020. She finalized her divorce in February and released the double-diamond-certified single “Braba” in March, which charted in both Brazil and Portugal. She then issued the Top 20 duet “Flores” with Vitão, though its video was briefly pulled from YouTube after criticism of its racy scenes while the pair were romantically involved. She portrayed Mel in several episodes of the telenovela Amor de Mãe and, between October and December, appeared on Lexa’s “Quebrar Seu Coração,” Leo Santana’s “Século 21,” and Danna Paola and Aitana’s “Friend de Semana,” while also dropping her own “Turbo Modo” with Pabllo Vittar and Anitta.

In February 2021 she released the Top 20 hit “Cansar Você” with Thiaguinho, which peaked at number 18, and added guest spots to Bruno Martini’s “Ain’t Worried,” Katy Perry’s “Cry About It Later,” and Pedro Sampaio’s “Attention.” May brought the single “Tentação” with Carol Biazin and its controversial video; immediately after release Sonza publicly identified as bisexual and faced attacks from both traditional and social media. On 18 July, her 23rd birthday, she issued the album DOCE 22 along with the singles “VIP *-* (feat. 6Black)” and “Melhor Sozinha :)-:.” A remix of the latter arrived the following month in partnership with singer Marília Mendonça, and the third single “Penhasco” followed in August, reaching number 29.
