Lunik experimented with a rotating cast of musicians and a variety of musical styles before settling into melodic pop during the early 2000s. The Swiss group came together in 1997 with an initial lineup of Adi Amstutz, Luk Zimmermann, Mats Marti, Walo Müller, and Anton Hoglhammer. Lead singer Rahel “Jaël” Krebs joined the following year, prompting Hoglhammer’s exit and shifting the ensemble toward trip-hop. Their debut album, Rumour, appeared in 1999, with Ahead arriving two years later. During that period both Müller and Amstutz departed, and bassist Oli Müller—no relation to Walo—was recruited to handle live duties. The band’s evolving roster coincided with a change in sound; on the 2003 release Weather they embraced a light, acoustic-guitar-based style reminiscent of Klee and Annett Louisan, earning modest Swiss chart placement. Keyboardist Cedric Saurer and bassist Jacob Suske were added for the subsequent tour and became permanent members a couple of years afterward. Drummer Marti exited upon their arrival, and Chrigel Bosshard took over the drum chair in 2006.
