Lustra originated as a Boston pop-punk outfit called Seventeen when it first assembled in 1996. The founding roster—Chris Baird handling drums and vocals, Nick Cloutman on bass and vocals, Jon Baird on rhythm guitar, and Jason Adams on lead guitar—cut its debut full-length, Breakfast at Tammy's, two years later. After Chris Baird switched to bass, Cloutman moved to guitar, and Bruce Fulford joined on drums, the group issued the 1999 EP Ransom Your Handsome and followed it with the 2000 album Bikini Pie Fight!, whose production credits include Ron St. Germain of Sonic Youth alongside Scott Riebling of Letters to Cleo.

Once Bikini Pie Fight! appeared, Jon Baird exited, the band relocated from Boston to Los Angeles, and mounting legal pressure from Seventeen magazine prompted the remaining quartet to adopt the name Lustra in 2001; its first release under the new moniker arrived in 2003. The next year Lustra supplied the original track “Scotty Doesn’t Know” for a scene in the 2004 comedy Euro Trip, in which Boston native Matt Damon made a cameo appearance as the group’s frontman. Subsequent departures by Adams and Fulford led to the additions of guitarist Travis Lee and drummer Phil Matthews, enabling Lustra to deliver the 2006 album Left for Dead, which again featured “Scotty Doesn’t Know.”
