Biography
Mafia K'1 Fry emerged in 1995 as a sprawling hardcore rap collective based in Val-de-Marne, initially operating under the name L'Union and quickly assembling one of the most prominent lineups in French hip-hop. Kery James, leader of Ideal J, and Manu Key, frontman of Different Teep, guided the project, whose ranks occasionally expanded to 16 members and already counted rapper Rohff plus the full trio 113—Rim-K, AP, and Mokobé—among its core. The individual chart triumphs of these artists soon elevated the collective’s visibility, prompting the release of its first EP, Les Liens Sacrés, in 1997 and the follow-up Légendaire Mafia K'1 Fry the next year. James’s exit in 1999, prompted by the killing of a close associate, his subsequent turn to Islam, and his later reappearance as a leading figure in French rap, abruptly halted the group’s progress; the remaining participants dispersed into solo work until they regrouped in 2003 to deliver the hit album La Cerise Sur le Ghetto. A year afterward, the feature-length documentary Si Tu Roules Avec la Mafia K'1 Fry appeared on DVD to both commercial and critical acclaim, yet Rohff’s departure again stalled momentum, delaying the next studio effort, Jusqu’à la Mort, until early 2007.
