Biography
Mandy Barnett first gained notice as a vocalist steeped in classic country and pop traditions, known for her enduring tone and commanding presence. Her earliest stage work involved portraying Patsy Cline night after night in the long-running production Always...Patsy Cline at the Ryman Auditorium. The self-titled debut arrived in 1996, yet wider attention came with her 1999 sophomore album, I've Got a Right to Cry, which earned strong critical notice. Later recordings paid direct tribute to Patsy Cline on Sweet Dreams and to Don Gibson on I Can’t Stop Loving You. In 2018 she released Strange Conversation, an album that folded Americana, roots, pop, and R&B into a single soulful statement. Two years afterward she turned to Billie Holiday repertoire for Every Star Above, a lavish project captured with a sixty-piece orchestra.
Born Amanda Carol Barnett, she sang from an early age and captured the Best Country Act honor at Dollywood while still ten. Her mother regularly accompanied her on visits to Nashville. During adolescence she secured a deal with the noted talent scout and producer Jimmy Bowen, which soon led to Asylum Records. An artist guided by the classic country lineage of Patsy Cline, Jim Reeves, Webb Pierce, and Brenda Lee, Barnett approached each song with close attention to its emotional detail and delivered it through the full weight of her voice. The torch-lit quality of her singing on material that mixed contemporary and vintage country and pop textures naturally echoed Patsy Cline, which is why she supported herself, before completing her first album, by performing the role four nights a week for twenty-six weeks each year in Always...Patsy Cline at the Ryman Auditorium.
She moved from Asylum to Sire Records for the release of I've Got a Right to Cry in 1999. Winter Wonderland, a holiday collection marked by vintage Nashville production, appeared on Rounder Records in 2010. Sweet Dreams followed on Opry Records the next year. In 2013 she issued the tribute album I Can't Stop Loving You. Strange Conversation expanded her palette in 2018 with its lush and soulful arrangements. Two years later A Nashville Songbook collected covers drawn chiefly from the 1950s and 1960s. Her next project centered on songs from Billie Holiday’s Lady in Satin, recorded with a sixty-piece orchestra and issued as Every Star Above in 2021.
