Born in Cordoba, Argentina, operatic tenor Marcelo Alvarez rose to worldwide acclaim during the closing years of the 1990s and stands among opera’s most remarkable success stories. While attending college in Argentina, he held a job at a furniture factory and treated vocal study as a leisure pursuit. Only after his wife urged him to treat singing seriously did the couple relocate, first to Buenos Aires and later to Italy. Soon after reaching Italy, he secured his initial major opportunity by stepping in as understudy for the premiere run of La Traviata, after which engagements have taken him across the globe. On Sony Classical he has issued two compact discs. The first, Bel Canto, gathers favorite Italian tenor arias drawn from La Traviata, Rigoletto, Lucia di Lammermoor, and L’Elisir d’Amore. The second, Sings Carlos Gardel, honors the Argentine tangos created by singer and composer Carlos Gardel.
