Biography
The lyric tenor Ramón Vargas, whose voice has drawn comparisons to Luciano Pavarotti, stands among the foremost interpreters of Verdi and Rossini. Mexico has produced few opera singers of comparable stature in modern times.
Born September 11, 1960, in Mexico City, Vargas began singing at age nine as a member of the choir at the Basilica of Guadalupe. He later attended the Instituto de Música y Arte Cardenal Miranda, studying under António López and Ricardo Sánchez. His first major recognition arrived with victory at the 1982 Carlo Morelli National Singing Competition. That same year he made his professional stage debut in Monterrey, performing in Haydn’s Lo speziale. The following year conductor Eduardo Mata invited him to sing Don Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Fenton in Verdi’s Falstaff. Success at Milan’s Enrico Caruso Tenor Competition prompted his relocation to Europe, where he pursued advanced training with Leo Müller at the Vienna State Opera school and engaged Rodolfo Celletti as his coach in Milan. His first appearance on disc came in 1993 on a recording of Bellini’s Zaira alongside Katia Ricciarelli; his initial solo recital disc followed in 1996 on the Claves label under the title Christmas with Ramon Vargas.
Vargas has performed at leading theaters worldwide, among them La Scala, where he has taken principal Verdi roles, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Vienna State Opera. His core repertoire centers on Verdi, Rossini, and the broader Italian bel canto tradition. He has also built a distinguished concert career encompassing German lieder, Italian song, French mélodies, and occasional selections from the Mexican popular tradition. British Opera Now designated him Artist of the Year. His recordings have appeared on Claves, RCA Red Seal, and additional labels, encompassing numerous complete operas as well as recital discs such as Verdi Arias (2001) and Between Friends (2004). Although the rate of new releases later declined, he returned to the studio in 2023 for Opera Rara’s first recording of Saverio Mercadante’s Il Proscritto.
