Biography
Born in Yorba Linda, California, to English parents who lead the evangelical Christian Association of Vineyard Churches on an international scale, Marcus Mumford grew up in Wimbledon Chase, a London suburb, and attended King’s College School there. He spent one year at the University of Edinburgh before returning to the capital to launch a music career, initially serving as touring drummer for singer-songwriter Laura Marling. In 2007 he joined banjo and dobro player Winston Marshall, keyboardist Ben Lovett, and bassist Ted Dwane to form Mumford & Sons, a Grammy Award-winning folk-rock band for which he serves as frontman and namesake. The group first surfaced in 2009 with the Mercury Prize-nominated Sigh No More and later topped the Billboard 200 with Babel (2012), Wilder Mind (2015), and Delta (2018). In 2020 Mumford collaborated with composer Tom Howe on the score and theme song for the American sports comedy-drama series Ted Lasso, whose second-season soundtrack, Ted Lasso: Season 2, followed in 2021. The next year he released his debut solo album, cheekily titled (self-titled), produced by Blake Mills and featuring guest appearances by Brandi Carlile, Phoebe Bridgers, Clairo, and Monica Martin.
