Born on February 1, 1964, in Dolbeau, Quebec, Mario Pelchat established himself as a French pop singer whose following within the province has remained strong for several decades. His first album, Je Suis un Chanteur, appeared on Disques #1 in 1982 while he was still a teenager. The label issued a second set, Tu M'as Fait Mal, the following year, after which Pelchat withdrew from recording for roughly five years.

He resumed his career in 1988 with the album Mario Pelchat and followed it with Couleur Passion in 1990. His popularity reached its zenith in 1993 through the Sony release Pelchat, which featured the duet “Plus Haut Que Moi” with Celine Dion. A second Sony album, C'est la Vie!, arrived in 1995.

Pelchat then paused his studio activity to perform in the musical comedy La Vie en Bleu in 1997. Two compilations appeared the next year: Incontournables, drawn from his Sony recordings, and Mes Premières Chansons, which collected material from the 1980s. VII marked his return to new recordings in 1999 and supported an extensive tour.

Additional projects include Pelchat 2002, which revisited his 1993 breakthrough; the concert album Live - À Guichets Fermés (2003); the Christmas gospel recording Noël Avec Jireh Gospel Choir (2004); Le Monde Où Je Vais (2006); a deluxe reissue of VII (2008); the collaboration Mario Pelchat/Michel Legrand (2009) with the noted composer; Toujours de Nous (2010); and Agnus Dei (2017), recorded with the vocal trio Les Prêtres.
