Helen Marnie serves as keyboardist and lead vocalist in Ladytron while also creating introspective synth pop under her solo alias Marnie. Glasgow was her birthplace and childhood home, where her early listening encompassed 1980s figures including Madonna, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, and the Bangles alongside Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, and Maria Callas. Classical piano training took place at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, after which she completed a B.A. in pop music at the University of Liverpool in 1999. Ladytron came together that same year with Daniel Hunt, Reuben Wu, and Mira Aroyo; five albums later, the group paused activities in 2011, prompting Marnie to launch her own projects. In Reykjavik, Iceland, she cut her first solo record, Crystal World, alongside Hunt and Barði Jóhannsson of Bang Gang, with Les Disques du Crépuscule issuing it in 2013. Record Store Day 2014 brought the single The Hunter Remixed, containing reworkings by Stephen Morris, Mark Reeder, and Roman Nose. September saw the arrival of another single, “Wolves,” whose limited Marsheaux remix edition followed on Record Store Day 2015. After guest work with Bang Gang and RM Hubbert, she delivered her sophomore album, Strange Words and Weird Wars, through Disco Pinata in June 2017.
