Biography
Sean McBride of Xeno & Oaklander channels Martial Canterel as a post-wave outlet that revives the frosty synthesizer textures and emotional distance of 1970s cold wave. Residing in Brooklyn, New York, he maintains fidelity to that lineage by rejecting samples and overdubs in favor of analog synthesizers and multi-step sequencers. Among the first revivalists, McBride took the stage for the initial time in 2002 and delivered his debut cassette, Sister Age, in 2004. Xanten, Chondritic Sound, Genetic Music, and Tarantulla Productions issued the albums Confusing Outsides in 2005, Drilling Backwards in 2006, Austerton in 2007, and Cruelty Reigns Through the Ages in 2008, yet McBride transferred Martial Canterel to Wierd Records, a leading post-wave label, for the 2010 singles You Today and Occupy These Terms. The album You Today, examining the mutual dependence of isolation and technology, surfaced in early 2011. Electric Voice Records presented Navigations, an album of "forgotten tracks, sketches, and unfinished work," in 2013, after which Dais released Gyors, Lassú in 2014. Medical Records followed in 2017 with two further Navigations albums plus a box set housing the complete trilogy, and Dais later issued the full-length Lost at Sea that same year.
