Biography
An indie rock outfit based in New York City, Mass Gothic operates under the direction of Noel Heroux, a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist previously associated with Hooray for Earth until its dissolution in 2014. The label Sub Pop acquired the endeavor in 2015, leading to the group's initial performance at a CMJ showcase presented by Sub Pop and Hardly Art and topped by Protomartyr during October of that year. Shortly thereafter came the release of their inaugural track, the hazy and melancholic "Nice Night." Characterizing the venture as an opportunity for renewal, Heroux handled the composition and production of the self-titled first album entirely in his residence. Blending lo-fi aesthetics with synth pop elements and expansive, guitar-driven melancholy, the album Mass Gothic emerged in February 2016. I've Tortured You Long Enough marked the band's follow-up effort two years subsequently. While maintaining a comparable approach to the prior release, this album featured an expanded contribution from Heroux's spouse Jessica Zambri, who delivered a substantial share of the primary vocals.
