Biography
Emerging from Rochester, New York, Maybird blends sweeping psychedelic textures with roots-rock inflections, evolving from an earlier endeavor led by vocalist Josh Netsky. After issuing their independent debut Down and Under in 2013, the band joined 30th Century Records and delivered its first album for the imprint, Things I Remember from Earth, in 2019.
Singer-songwriter Josh Netsky, who had already put out four solo projects and toured extensively along the East Coast, assembled the initial lineup. For an extended period the Josh Netsky Band featured a revolving cast, with Adam Netsky remaining the only steady member besides his sibling Josh. When guitarist Sam Snyder missed a performance, Kurt Johnson—adept on both electric guitar and pedal steel—was enlisted for the evening. The immediate musical rapport between Josh and Johnson prompted a shift toward more open-ended exploration. The ensemble then moved to Brooklyn, adopted the name Maybird, and stabilized its roster by adding bassist James Preston alongside the Netsky brothers, Snyder, and Johnson. That configuration recorded the ambitious 2013 release Down and Under.
As the group built an East Coast audience, producer Danger Mouse, impressed by the album, invited them to his 30th Century Records roster. Their first outing on the label, the EP Turning Into Water, arrived in April 2016. The following year brought a second EP, Unravelling, produced by the Black Keys’ Patrick Carney. After these releases, Maybird returned with the full-length Things I Remember from Earth on 30th Century in May 2019.
