Formed in Brooklyn, the indie pop group Hospitality consists of songwriter-vocalist Amber Papini along with Nathan Michel—who already had multiple solo releases on imprints such as Tigerbeat 6 and Tomlab when he became a member—and Brian Betancourt. Early in 2009, the trio drew notice from outlets including Pitchfork and Stereogum thanks to an untitled EP they issued themselves. Karl Blau handled production on that recording, which highlighted the ensemble's minimalist and playful aesthetic reminiscent of Arthur & Yu, Taken by Trees, and Camera Obscura. After inking a deal with Merge, they delivered their self-titled full-length album in January 2012; it reworked select tracks from before while introducing fresh pieces drawing from themes of youth, New York life, and reflections on times ahead and behind. Their follow-up, Trouble, came out on the same label in early 2014. Michel and Matt Boynton produced the effort, which delved into more somber lyrical content and emphasized thoughtful song arrangements.
