Maywood

Sisters Alie and Edith de Vries from Harlingen launched the Dutch pop duo Maywood in 1979. Earlier, as participants in Ladypops, Karina's, and Colt 45, they had performed under the stage names Alice May and Caren Wood. Inspired by ABBA together with fellow Dutch groups Pussycat and Teach-In, dark-haired Caren on lead vocals and blonde Alice as songwriter and backing vocalist entered the Europop scene through the December 1979 single "You Treated Me Wrong." In June 1980 "Late at Night" climbed to number one in the Netherlands, while "Give Me Back My Love" in September 1980 and "Rio" in July 1981 each reached the Top Five. Maywood's recordings reached 52 countries and earned awards at music festivals in Germany, Poland, Japan, and South Korea. Strong popularity across Latin America led the sisters to release an album of Spanish-language covers of their hits. They represented the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1990 with "Ik Wil Alles Met Je Delen." Maywood disbanded in 1995.
