In 2008 Devendra Banhart extended the psychedelic, 1970s-rooted direction of his solo work by forming the side project Megapuss with Priestbird percussionist Greg Rogove. The Los Angeles-based pair made their first appearance that June at the Hammer Museum in L.A., where they performed original songs alongside an abstract reinterpretation of Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." The concert drew notoriety from enormous projected images of a nude Devendra displayed above the stage and from the belt of plastic phalluses worn by the vocalist during the set. That same appetite for the unsettling and irreverent shaped the duo’s debut album, Surfing, whose track list included “Crop Circle Jerk '94” and “Chicken Titz.” Vapor Records, the label founded by Neil Young, released the record digitally in September 2008 and issued the physical CD the following month.
