Biography
Melissa Ferrick blends the reflective honesty of folk traditions with the edgy sensibility and stylistic leanings of 1980s college rock. Early notice arrived when the artist opened for Morrissey in the first half of the 1990s; Atlantic then issued the 1994 album Massive Blur, yet neither that project nor its follow-up Willing to Wait reached mainstream audiences. Independence took hold after Made of Honor appeared on What Are Records? in 1996. While instructing students at Northeastern University and Berklee College of Music, Ferrick continued issuing recordings, initially on the self-run Right On Records imprint, before moving to Kill Rock Stars in 2023 for the single “Black Dress.”
Born and raised in Ipswich, Massachusetts, Ferrick studied classical violin and piano during childhood before adding trumpet and bass in teenage years. After graduating from Berklee College of Music in late adolescence, the performer launched a career by playing New York City coffee houses and eventually basing operations in Boston. The pivotal opportunity came in 1991, when Ferrick substituted for Morrissey’s support act with less than an hour’s notice; the set convinced Morrissey to retain the opener for the remainder of the tour, after which Atlantic offered a recording contract. The label released Massive Blur in 1994 to favorable notices, but the more austere Willing to Wait failed to generate sufficient interest, ending the major-label relationship. Ferrick next joined the Colorado independent What Are Records? for the 1996 album Made of Honor and stayed through subsequent projects including Everything I Need, Freedom, and the live set +1. Taking a cue from Ani DiFranco, the artist launched Right On Records, debuting the imprint with the 2001 live album Skinnier, Faster, Live at the B.P.C., quickly followed by the studio release Valentine Heartache.
Throughout the early 2000s Ferrick adopted a steady cycle of recording and road work that often reached 150 concerts annually. In 2011 the artist moved to MPress Records for Still Right Here, an album that earned widespread praise and the OUT Music Awards Most Influential Artist designation for that year. One further MPress title, The Truth Is, appeared in 2013, the same year Ferrick began teaching at Berklee College of Music; seven years later a faculty appointment at Northeastern University followed. Balancing academic and performing roles, Ferrick reactivated Right On Records for a self-titled 2015 album. Early in the 2020s the management firm Drive Music Agency was founded. The 2023 signing with Kill Rock Stars preceded the single “Black Dress” and a full-length album slated for 2024.
