Biography
Rapper Memphis Bleek spent his formative years in Brooklyn's Marcy Projects housing development in New York, entering the studio for the first time in 1996 on Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt. Affiliated with the Roc-A-Fella Records roster, he issued his own debut album, Coming of Age, in 1999. Although the project attracted considerable notice, Bleek proved unable to sustain the surrounding momentum, delivering instead an uneven set of tracks whose chief highlight remained a Swizz Beatz-produced lead single that ultimately fell short of widespread expectations.
Late in 2000 he returned with his second album, The Understanding, which arrived in tandem with his widely visible joint appearance alongside Jay-Z on the single "Hey Papi" from the Nutty Professor II soundtrack and the Hype Williams-directed video that featured a cameo by Pamela Anderson. Building on that conspicuous promotional move, "Mind Right" was soon unveiled as the album's lead single. His third full-length effort, M.A.D.E., followed in 2003, with 534 arriving two years later.
