Biography
A fixture in the Vox label's affordable catalog for years, pianist Michael Ponti focused his efforts on neglected works from the Romantic era. He also tackled standard pieces and became the initial artist to commit the full keyboard output of Scriabin, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninov to disc.
Although Germany served as his birthplace, the site of his death, and part of his training, Ponti held American citizenship. Born on October 29, 1937, in Freiburg im Breisgau, he owed his U.S. ties to a father who worked as a diplomat there. The household relocated to America soon afterward, with his mother securing citizenship as well. In Washington, D.C., he spent a decade under the guidance of Gilmour McDonald—a pupil of Leopold Godowsky—culminating at age 11 in four recitals that presented Bach's complete Well-Tempered Clavier from memory. Returning to Germany in 1955, Ponti enrolled at Frankfurt's Hochschule für Musik, where Erich Flinsch, once an assistant to Liszt pupil Emil von Sauer, instructed him; he further benefited from master classes with Artur Rubinstein and Robert Casadesus.
Two 1964 competition successes—a top prize at Italy's Busoni Competition and a placing at Belgium's Queen Elisabeth Competition—propelled his professional start, which included a Vienna performance of Bartók's Piano Concerto No. 2 led by Wolfgang Sawallisch. His New York debut followed in 1972 at Alice Tully Hall, an extended event featuring nine encores, several chosen by listeners, that stretched nearly to midnight.
Budget-conscious audiences came to know Ponti through his numerous Vox LPs, many devoted to then-little-known Romantic scores by composers such as Hans Bronsart von Schellendorff, Sigismond Thalberg, and Henry Litolff. On stage he collaborated with groups including the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Buenos Aires Philharmonic, and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, while touring encompassed Europe plus engagements in Egypt, Japan, South America, southern Africa, and Australia. In 1977 he established the Ponti-Zimansky-Polasek Trio and maintained an active schedule with the ensemble. His activity persisted into the 2000s, marked by Vox's 2002 reissue of the Scriabin cycle. A stroke in the late 1990s impaired his right hand, yet he resumed performing left-hand literature. More than 80 recordings stand in his discography. Ponti died in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, on October 17, 2022.
