A Canadian pop singer renowned equally for his screen appearances and his recorded output, Michel Louvain attained stardom in the final years of the 1950s and retained widespread appeal through the balance of the twentieth century and afterward. He was born Michel Poulin on July 12, 1937, in Thetford Mines, Quebec. His first television outing took place on the CBC program Gala des Splendeurs in 1957, after which he issued his initial single, “Buenas Noches Mi Amor,” before the year ended. That release proved a major success and led directly to his first full-length album on the Apex label in 1958. Albums continued to appear on a regular basis throughout the 1960s, whereas releases grew less frequent during the 1970s and 1980s even as he sustained an active and loyal following. Activity diminished further from the 1990s forward, yet new recordings still surfaced periodically, among them the well-received 2011 album Je N'ai Pas Changé. Numerous signature tracks surface on the 2007 anthology L'Anthologie: 50 Chansons, among them “Un Certain Sourire,” “La Dame en Bleu,” “Louise,” and “Sylvie.”
