Biography
During the closing years of the 1960s and the opening of the 1970s, pianist Monguito Santamaria cut multiple albums on the Fania label, gaining attention thanks to their prominent bass lines and their role as anthems among enthusiasts of Latin soul. As the offspring of the Afro-Cuban percussion icon Mongo Santamaria—distinct from the singer Monguito who collaborated with Johnny Pacheco—he was raised amid the vibrant musical environment of New York, particularly during his father's tenure in Tito Puente's band throughout the 1950s. Additional musical training and some early recordings took place during his time at Brooklyn College. While his familial ties likely facilitated securing a deal with Fania, the albums from his late-1960s output, specifically Hey Sister and Black Out, stood out as exemplary within the Latin soul movement that dominated the period. Nevertheless, his discography concluded with just a single further release, En Una Nota! from 1974.
