Mortification

Many regard Mortification as the most extreme Christian band that has ever existed. The group formed in 1990 from the remnants of Lightforce and set out to deliver a constructive counterpoint to leading death metal outfits such as Carcass, Death, and Obituary. Their self-titled 1990 debut quickly earned them a reputation in their native Australia as one of the loudest and fastest acts on the circuit. The 1992 follow-up Scrolls of the Megilloth drew notice from the heavy metal underground and includes some of the most frightening vocals ever committed to tape. Later releases grew more experimental, fusing punk, death, and thrash metal elements, among them 1998’s Triumph of Mercy and 2000’s 10 Years Live, Not Dead. Bassist/vocalist Steve Rowe has written the bulk of the group’s material and stands as its sole remaining original member.
