Biography
Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, the cult figure renowned globally for his notorious Rat Fink character featured on countless merchandise items like models, trading cards, key chains, and t-shirts, spearheaded the 1960s novelty group Mr. Gasser & the Weirdos. Roth entered the world on March 4, 1932, developing an early passion for airplanes, speedy automobiles, and frightening creatures that prompted him to construct wooden creations in his father's cabinet-making workshop, where encouragement came freely. Hot rods captured his primary attention during his teenage years, coinciding with college studies in engineering and hands-on automotive work. Following his Air Force service period, Roth persisted in vehicle reconstruction while earning a living through sales of his Rat Fink illustrations and apparel at racing events. The Rat Fink craze reached widespread popularity by the early 1960s, with factory-produced model kits and garments becoming favorites among young people. During this era, Roth established Mr. Gasser & the Weirdos, an eccentric surf ensemble that put out several albums on Capitol Records, specifically Hot Rod Hootenanny in 1963 along with Rods N' Ratfinks and Surfink! the following year. A comprehensive 30-song retrospective of their work appeared in 1995 under the title The Hot Rod Hootenanny: Rat Fink Collection.
